'for the most part', ‘make the most of'는 ’최상급 most'가 들어간 관용 표현들입니다. 회화에는 자주 쓰이지 않지만, 독해에 자주 나오기 때문에 잘 알아 두길 바랍니다.

각 표현별로 정리해 보겠습니다.

1. for the most part 

for the most part : (부사) 대개, 주로, 보통

                         (=generally, usually, in general, mostly, etc)

'for the most part'는 ‘대개, 주로’라는 뜻으로 사용되는 부사입니다.

(1) For the most part, he is very kind.

    (대개, 그는 친절하다)

(1-1) For most part, he is very kind. (x)

(1-2) Generally he is very kind.

       = Usually he is very kind.

'for the most part'에서는 'most' 앞에 정관사 ‘the'를 써야합니다. ’most'가 최상급이기 때문입니다. (1-1)과 같은 표현은 쓰이지 않습니다.

회화에서는 보통 'for the most part' 대신에 (1-2)와 같이 'generally, usually'를 씁니다.

(1) 동사구 'make the most of'

    'make the most of'는 동사이므로 다음과 같은 활용이 가능합니다.

① 목적어를 취한다.

    ex) Make the most of your time. (your time 목적어)

        (시간을 잘 활용해라)

② ~ing를 붙일 수 있다.

    a. Making the most of your time is your life goal. (~ing 동명사)

       (당신의 시간을 활용하는 것이 당신의 인생 목표이다)

    b. Making the most of his time, he could achieve a great success. (~ing 분사)

       (그의 시간을 잘 활용하면서, 그는 성취할 수 있었다/ 커다란 성공을)

③ ~ed 형태로 사용됩니다.

    ex) Generally his time is made the most of.

        (보통, 그의 시간은 잘 활용된다)

일반적으로 ‘make the most of' 형태가 가장 많이 사용됩니다.

(2) 예문

    'make the most of'가 들어간 예문을 몇 개 더 보겠습니다.

① Make the most of yourself.

    (자신을 최대한 활용해라)
