1. play hooky 의미

hooky의 사전적 의미는 다음과 같습니다.

hooky : 명. (학교나 직장을) 꾀부려 빼먹는 것

           동. 꾀부려 쉬다, 슬쩍 훔치다.

           (To stay away from work and duty, or esp from school without an excuse; be truant)

그러므로 'play hooky'는 ‘땡땡이를 치다, 수업을 빼먹다’라는 뜻을 갖습니다.

play hooky : 수업을 빼먹다

'play hook'가 들어간 예문들을 살펴 봅시다.

(1) The weather is so fine that I feel like playing hooky.

     날씨가 너무 좋아서 수업을 땡땡이 치고 싶다.

2. play hooky 유래

관용구 ‘play hooky’는 네덜란드어 hooekje에서 왔다는 주장이 있습니다. 

네덜란드어 hookje는 숨바꼭질(hid and seek)을 뜻합니다. New Amsterdam(옛 New York)에는 당연히 네덜란드인들이 많이 정착을 했습니다. 이 정착민들의 아이들이 즐겨하던 놀이 hookje에서 'hooky'가 유래했다고 합니다. 그 당시 애들은 수업을 빼먹고 ‘hooekje'를 하고 놀았나 봅니다. 여기서 나온 표현이 'play hooky’입니다.

수업 땡땡이에 일가견이 있었던 Tom Sawyer. Mark Twain이 쓴 'Tom Sawyer'에도 이 표현이 등장합니다.

"He moped to school gloomy and sad, and took his flogging, along with Joe Harper, for playing hooky the day before." (Mark Twain, Tom Sawyer)

3. play hooky 동의어

'play hooky'와 같은 뜻을 지난 표현에는 ‘skip class', 'ditch class'등이 있습니다.

play hooky : 땡땡이 치다

                 = skip class

                 = ditch class

                 = play truant

ex) I decided to play hooky from school today.

     = I decided to skip class today.

     = I decided to ditch class today.

     = I decided to play truant today.

        (나는 오늘 땡땡이 치기로 마음 먹었다)
