부사절이란?

부사절의 정의

이번 시간에는 부사절을 공부하겠습니다.

 

부사절 1

1. 문장에서 부사 역할을 하여, 동사나 형용사 그리고 부사를 수식하는 절을 부사절이라고 합니다.

 

 thoughtlessly.

Jack spoke    without thinking.

 before he thought.

                          there.

The school stands    at the crossroads.

                           where the roads meet.

 

                         monthly.

We pay our rent    on the first of every month.

                         where the first of the month comes.

 

각 그룹에서, 동사(spoke, stands, pay)는 (1) 부사에 의해서, (2) 부사구에 의해서, (3) 부사절에 의해서 수식을 받습니다.

 

부사절 2

2. 부사절은 흔히 동사를 수식하지만, 또한 형용사나 부사를 수식하기도 합니다.

 

■ He was angry because he had failed. [angry 수식]

■ I am uncertain which road I should take. [uncertain 수식]

■ The horizon extended farther than eye could see. [farther 수식]

■ A wall protected the path here, where the cliff was steepest, [here 수식]

 

 

3. 'that'이 이끄는 절도 동사나 형용사, 그리고 부사를 수식하여 부사절로 사용될 수 있습니다.

■ He rejoiced that he won the game.

■ I am glad that you are coming.

■ He was positive that there had been no harm.

■ They were afraid that the scandal would be revealed.

 

이렇게 사용된 that절은 “because'나 ”as to the fact that'이라는 의미를 갖습니다.
