이번 시간에는 비교급 관용표현(2부)을 공부하겠습니다.

[비교급 관용표현 1부] more than / not more than, no less than / not less than

오늘 공부할 표현들입니다.

1. nothing more than VS nothing less than

2. no other than VS none other than

이 표현들은 구별이 어렵지만 많이 쓰입니다. 잘 익혀 두길 바랍니다.

1. nothing more than VS nothing less than

이 두 구문은 거의 같은 의미로 쓰이지만 뉘앙스가 다릅니다. 관용구이기 때문에 의미를 외워 두는 것이 편합니다.

(1) nothing more than : 단지, ~에 불과한

                              (= only, merely, no more than)

'nothing more than' 구문은 '별것 아닌“이라는 뉘앙스를 가집니다.

① He is nothing more than a child.

    (그는 단지 어린 아이야)

    (뭘 기대해, 아이에게서...)

② This is nothing more than a rock.

    (이것은 단지 돌맹이 하나에 불과해)

    (돌맹이 하나 가지고 뭔 난리야...)

위 예문에서 보는 것처럼 약간 ‘무시하는’ 뉘앙스로 사용됩니다.

(2) nothing less than : 바로 그것

    (= exactly, surely, completely)

    (= nothing short of : ~와 다름없는)

 

'nothing less than'은 ‘정확하게 바로 그것’을 의미합니다.

① It was nothing less than a miracle.

    (그것은 바로 기적이었어)

② You are nothing less than crazy.

    (너 완전히 미쳤구나)

'nothing less than' 구문은 ‘nothing short of’로 바꾸어 쓸 수도 있습니다. 이 때 'short'는 ‘~이 부족한’이라는 뜻입니다.

③ She is nothing short of a genius.

 = She is nothing less than a genius.

    (그녀는 부족함이 없다/ 천재이기에)

주의

‘nothing more than', 'nothing less than'을 구별하지 않고 쓰는 경우도 있습니다. 그러니 너무 엄격하게 구별하지 않아도 됩니다. 혼동된다면 다른 표현을 쓰는 것이 더 낫습니다.

2. no other than VS none other than

'no other than'은 ‘none other than'과 의미가 갖습니다.

no(none) other than ~ : 다름 아닌 바로 그 ~

                               (= nothing less than, exactly)

                               (= nothing short of)

(1) It was no(none) other than the president herself.

  = It was nothing less than the president herself.

     (그것은 다름 아닌 대통령 자신이었다)

(2) Alexander's teacher was none(no) other than Aristotle.

  = Alexander's teacher was nothing short of Aristotle.

    (알렉산더의 스승은 다름 아닌 아리스토 텔레스였다)

(1), (2)에서 보듯이 'no other than', ‘none other than'은 같은 의미를 갖습니다. 단지 'no other than'이 훨씬 더 많이(대략 100배) 사용됩니다.
