3. 흥미

 

 어떤 이야기를 즐기기 위해서는, 그것에 흥미를 가져야 합니다. 그리고 그 이야기를 말할 때도 흥미를 불러 일으킬 수 있어야 합니다. 발표를 들었을 때, 다른 사람들보다 재미있게 말했던 사람이 있습니다. 모두가 분명하게 말하고 싶은 것을 전달했을지라도, 더 재미있었던 사람이 분명 있습니다. 
 

 우리는 말하려는 것을 분명하게 말해야 합니다. 하지만 이야기를 할 때는 듣는 사람이 흥미를 갖도록 주의해서 말해야 합니다. (장난이 아니죠?)

4. 도입 (Introduction)

 

어떤 사건을 이야기 할 때는, 사건이 일어난 상황을 분명하게 알려 주어야 합니다. 분명한 도입은 이야기를 명확하게 만들고 전체 글에 대한 방향을 제시합니다. 어떤 사건을 분명하게 설명하기 위해서는 그 사건이 '언제(when), 어디서(where), 누가(who)‘ 있었을 때 발생했는지를 밝혀야 합니다. ’왜(why)'에 대한 답이 도입부에 주어지면 조금 더 분명하게 상황을 설명할 수 있습니다.

 다음 예를 봅시다.

ex) “Last November My wife and I were on a climbing expedition in Himalayas." 

 예문에는 '언제(when), 어디서(where), 누가(who)”에 대한 정보가 있습니다. 그리고 'on a tour'는 왜 우리가 히말라야 산맥에 갔는지 말해줄 뿐만 아니라, 다음에 다가올 사건들에 대해 간접적으로 알려줍니다. 

 다음 예문과 비교해 봅시다.
 

“Last summer My wife and I were on a trip in New York." 사람사는 일들이 대개 거기서 거기지만 히말라야 산맥과 뉴욕에서 벌어질 사건이 다를 것이라는 것쯤은 누구나 알 수 있습니다. 

반드시 '언제(when), 어디서(where), 누가(who)”, 왜(why)'에 대한 정보를 제공할 필요는 없습니다. 하지만 말로 이야기할 때만큼은 이러한 구체적인 정보를 제공하는 것이 명확한 전달에 도움이 됩니다. 

다음은 Exercise입니다. 

Identify what elements are included in each of the following introductions.

1. Mr. Jones, of the Manor Farm, had locked the hen-houses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the pop-holes. 

 

2. He was an old man who dished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. 
 

3. In the year 1878 I took my degree of Doctor of Medicine of the University of London, and proceeded to Netley to go through the course prescribed for surgeons in the army.
 

4. High above the city, on a tall column, stood the statue of the Happy Prince.  He was gilded all over with thin leaves of fine gold, for eyes he had two bright sapphires, and a large red ruby glowed on his sword-hilt.
 

5. Rudolf Steiner was a true adventurer. Few were the evenings on which he did not go forth from his hall bedchamber in search of the unexpected and the egregious. The most interesting thing in life seemed to him to be what might lie just around the next corner. Sometimes his willingness to tempt fate led him into strange paths.
