004. 크리스 마스 선물

 

One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it /was in pennies. 

Pennies saved one and two at a time /by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher /until one's cheeks burned /with the silent imputation of parsimony /that such close dealing implied. 

 Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. 

 And the next day would be Christmas. There was clearly nothing to do /but flop down on the shabby little couch /and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection /that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating.

1달러 87센트. 이것이 전부였다. 그 중에서도 60센트는 잔돈이었다. 

 한 번에 한푼 두푼 모은 것들이었다/ 식료품 가게 주인, 야채 파는 남자 그리고 푸줏간 주인에게, 얼굴을 붉히면서, 악착같이 깎았다. 그렇게 악착같이 흥정을 하면서 구두쇠 같다는 말없는 시선을 받기도 했다. 

 델라는 그것을 세 번이나 세어 봤다. 1달러 87센트였다. 

 그리고 내일이 크리스마스였다. 분명히 아무일도 할 게 없었다/ 초라한 작은 소파에 털썩 주저앉아 우는 것 말고는. 그래서 델라는 그렇게 했다. 그렇게 하고 있으니 인생이란, 흐느끼고, 훌쩍거리다가 웃는 것으로 되어 있는데, 주로 훌쩍거리는 것이라는 생각이 들었다.

O. Henry가 쓴 너무나 유명한 ‘크리스 마스’ 선물의 시작 부분입니다. 오 헨리 글을 읽을 때 감탄하는 것은 ‘어떻게 문장을 이렇게 압축적으로 쓸 수 있을까?’라는 것입니다. 

아래 문장을 잠깐 봅시다.

Life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating. 

인생이란, 흐느끼고, 훌쩍거리다가 웃는 것으로 되어 있는데,
주로 훌쩍거리는 것이라는 생각이 들었다.
