1. at most

at most : 기껏, 많아 봐야, 최대한으로 잡아서

'at most'는 ‘많아 봤자’라는 의미를 가지고 있습니다. 부정적까지는 아니더라도 ‘그렇게 많지는 않다’라는 뉘앙스를 줍니다.

   = John is very stingy. He spends no more than $10 on the lunch)

     (존은 아주 짠돌이다. 그는 기껏 10달러를 쓴다/ 점심에)

    ''at most'는 'at the most', 'at the very most' 등으로 바꾸어 쓸 수 있습니다.

(1-1) John spends at the most $10 on the lunch.

(1-2) John spends at the very most $10 on the lunch.

그렇지만 ‘at the most', 'at the very most'는 자주 쓰이는 표현들이 아닙니다. ’at most'가 주로 쓰입니다.

예문을 조금 더 보겠습니다.

(2) You have at most two minutes to solve each question.

    (너는 기껏 2분을 가지고 있다/ 각 문제를 푸는데)

(3) He is at most a child.

   = He is only a child.

     (그는 기껏해야 어린 아이다)

 

2. at least

at least : 적어도, 최소한

            (at the least, at the very least, not less than)

'at least'는 ‘at most'와 대조적인 의미를 가지며, ’아무리 적게 잡아도‘라는 뜻입니다. 보통 ’많다‘는 뉘앙스를 줍니다.

(1) The latest smart phone cost you at least $1,000.

  = The latest smart phone cost you not less than $1,000.

    (최신 스마트폰은 적어도 100만원은 한다)

‘at least'는 ’at the least', 'at the very least' 등으로 바꾸어 쓸 수 있습니다.

(1-1) The latest smart phone cost you at the least $1,000.

(1-2) The latest smart phone cost you at the very least $1,000.

 

역시 'at least'가 주로 쓰입니다. ‘at the least'는 잘 쓰이지 않는 표현입니다. 'at the very least'는 자주 사용되는 편입니다.
